Forti della release del nuovo The Post-Apocalyptic Servant, i Sinister sembrano in gran forma nonostante la line-up quasi completamente rinnovata. Aad Kloosterwaard ha fatto due chiacchiere con noi per introdurci il nuovo album dei suoi Sinister e svelarci il segreto di questa leggenda del death metal e della sua costanza produttiva.

Nicko: Ciao Aad, grazie della possibilità di questa intervista su Metallized! Aad: Di nulla!
Nicko: Per prima cosa, ho recensito il vostro ultimo disco sul nostro sito ed è un album incredibilmente intenso. Certamente i Sinister hanno attraversato diversi rinnovamenti stilistici che rendono il sound del vostro ultimo lavoro ben più moderno di quello dei capolavori passati, ma comunque diretto. Qual è l'obiettivo, musicalmente parlando, che cercavate di raggiungere, nello specifico, con questo nuovo album? Intendo dire sia come veterani del death metal, sia come musicisti. Aad: La prima cosa che cerchiamo sempre di fare è creare un album che la band apprezzi davvero, e speriamo poi che i nostri fan o in generale gli ascoltatori di metal estremo lo apprezzino altrettanto. Cerchiamo di suonare sempre come i Sinister, certamente, ma con ancor più brutalità nel sound, e certamente ci siamo riusciti, penso.
Nicko: Effettivamente, il nuovo album è un buon esempio di talento musicale sugli strumenti nel contesto del metal estremo. Cionondimeno, i Sinister hanno affrontato numerosi cambiamenti di line-up e la nuova formazione dietro al monicker ha soltanto 3 anni circa. Come considereresti la tua posizione nel tenere viva e reattiva questa band, essendo il veterano al lavoro accanto agli ereditieri della tua creazione musicale? I nuovi membri si sono adattati subito bene ai Sinister? Hanno contribuito in maniera personale allo sviluppo musicale della band? In che modo? Aad: Assolutamente sì! Bastiaan è attualmente il fulcro nella creazione di nuovi pezzi per i Sinister e sta facendo un ottimo lavoro. Il batterista Toep si sta occupando di tutti i testi della band, e io ne preparo gli arrangiamenti. Quindi sì, si può dire che alcuni membri stiano avendo una grande influenza nei Sinister. Bastiaan sa come i Sinister debbano suonare oggi e sta mescolando la vecchia vena musicale con la roba più moderna che stiamo scrivendo. Le nuove canzoni che abbiamo preparato hanno la stessa brutalità ma sono un po' più oscure, di nuovo.
Nicko: Inoltre, The Post-Apocalyptic Servant è un gran esempio di songwriting ispirato e ammiro il fatto che il vostro album continui a mirare direttamente al punto, senza essere eccessivamente longevo, nonostante gli standard musicali delle label, al giorno d'oggi. Credo semplicemente che i filler uccidano la brutalità e preferisco il death metal più diretto. Credo proprio che sia qualcosa che abbiate considerato nel consegnarci questo nuovo album dei Sinister, dico bene? Aad: Certo, fratello, che credi? Assolutamente sì! Death metal veloce e malsano diretto in faccia! Come deve essere e con una produzione potente! I Sinister non mettono mai parti riempitive, mai! Piuttosto è meglio fare un disco più corto… ma cerchiamo sempre di rendere una canzone la migliore possibile.
Nicko: Poi, il vostro nuovo disco ha un gran bel sound, sia con una batteria intensa che un tono chitarristico assolutamente godibile. Quanto tempo avete passato in studio, e come vi siete approcciati al sound di The Post-Apocalyptic Servant? Siete soddisfatti? Aad: Grazie! Anche noi riteniamo che questo disco abbia un'eccellente produzione, che si adatta perfettamente alle nostre canzoni. Avevamo a disposizione 3 settimane per registrare con Jorg agli studi Soundlodge ed è più che sufficiente per noi. Noi Sinister e Jorg collaboriamo da così tanto tempo che egli sa perfettamente come la band deve suonare. Ma questa volta sì è davvero superato, quindi sicuramente ci rivolgeremo ancora a lui la prossima volta.
Nicko: Sono molto interessato al concept dietro all'album, partendo dall'artwork e dal titolo, fino ad arrivare all'aspetto lirico. Che cosa ci puoi dire a tal proposito? Aad: Tratta della vita dopo l'apocalisse, quando ogni forma di vista sulla terra è morta. Gli unici sopravvissuti devono compiere le cose più terribili per restare vivi, come mangiare carne putrefatta e bere acqua tossica, a causa dei quali diventano zombi.
Nicko: Una domanda su di te: tempo fa, perché decidesti di lasciare la batteria e occuparti delle vocals? E come batterista, come considereresti il lavoro di Toep dietro le pelli negli ultimi due album dei Sinister? Credo che stia dando nuova energia ai Sinister. E in ogni caso, per quanto ti riguarda, non solo stai dando prova di un ottimo talento vocale, ma anche di una memorabile presenza sul palco. Quando vi ho visti, è certamente stato grandioso. Aad: Grazie molte per le belle parole, mi fa piacere sentire questo. Certo, Toep sta sicuramente spingendo i Sinister ad un livello più alto, ed è fantastico, ed è sicuramente la ragione per cui mi sono rivolto a lui, ovviamente. Ma anche Bastiaan sta facendo un lavoro incredibile sulle chitarre: non dimenticare che sta creando tutta la musica morbosa che appartiene ai Sinister odierni.
Nicko: Hai altri progetti oltre ai Sinister? Ricordo di aver letto dei Supreme Pain, nonché degli Houtwiser, qualche anno fa; li avevo trovati su internet – credo che tu sia rimasto aggiornato anche con le sonorità prettamente brutal death metal, dunque. Aad: Mi sto occupando solamente dei Sinister, è questa è la cosa più importante per me e non cambierà mai, di certo. I Supreme Pain spaccavano, ma quando Bastiaan lasciò per occuparsi dei Sinister, il gruppo stava disgregandosi. In effetti, era la persona che si occupava interamente del songwriting per i Supreme Pain.
Nicko: Avete qualche progetto per il futuro? Magari qualche tour? E magari avete anche intenzione di brutalizzare qualche palco italiano? Aad: Amiamo suonare in Italia, ovviamente, è sempre bello per noi e in particolare ci piacerebbe suonare con alcune delle grandi band che avete attualmente nel vostro paese: si potrebbe fare un festival grandioso. Alla fine di ottobre, invece, i Sinister saranno in tour per la prima volta in Australia. Non vedo davvero l'ora!
Nicko: Grazie per il tempo che hai dedicato a questa intervista! I miei migliori auguri per il futuro, e sentiti libero di lasciare un messaggio conclusivo ai tuoi fan italiani! Aad: Grazie mille! E spero che tutti i metallari estremi in Italia apprezzino la nostra ultima brutale creazione!

Nicko: Hi Aad, thank you for the possibility of this interview on Metallized! Aad: You're welcome!
Nicko: First of all, we had your latest record reviewed on our website. I wrote about it and it is an incredibly intense record. Surely, Sinister has gone through some stylistic renovations that make your latest album sound more modern than the oldest masterpieces, but still straightforward. What was the musical aim you were trying to achieve with this new record? As death metal veterans but also as musicians, I mean. Aad: The first thing we always try to do is to make a record that the band really likes, and then we hope that our fans (or extreme metal heads in general) like it too. We try to sound like Sinister, of course, but with much more brutality in the sound, and I think we surely did.
Nicko: Actually, the new record is a good example of talented musicianship in extreme metal music. Nonetheless, Sinister has gone through several line-up changes and the new formation behind the moniker is only about 3 years old. How do you consider your position in keeping this band going, being the veteran working with the heirs of your musical creation? Did the new members just fit great with Sinister? Did they contributed in a personal way to the musical development of the band? In which ways?
Aad: Hell yes... Bastiaan is now the man who is creating the new tracks for Sinister and is doing a great job. Toep, the drummer, is taking care of all the lyrics from the band, and I do all the arrangements for the lyrics. So yes, you can say that some members have a big influence in Sinister. Bastiaan knows how Sinister needs to sound nowadays and is mixing the old style with the more newer stuff that we do. New songs we have the same brutality but sound a bit darker again.
Nicko: Also, The Post-Apocalyptic Servant is a great example of inspired songwriting, and I admire the fact that your album still aim straight to the point, without being too long, even with the musical standard of the label nowadays. I just think fillers kill brutality and I prefer my death metal to be very straightforward. I guess it is something you considered to deliver us with this new Sinister record, am I right? Aad: Of course, brother, what do you think? Hell yes! Death metal, fast, sick and in your face, the way it have to be and with a killer production. Sinister never makes fillers on a record, never!!! Than it's better to make the record a bit shorter, but we try to make every song as good as possible.
Nicko: Then, your new record really sounds good, with both the drums pounding and the guitar tone being totally enjoyable. How much time did you spend in the studio, and how did you approach to the sound of The Post-Apocalyptic Servant? Are you satisfied? Aad: Thanks... we think that this record has an amazing production, too. It fits perfectly to our songs. We had 3 weeks for the recording by Jorg in the Soundlodge studio and that is more than enough for us. Jorg and
Sinister are working already so long together that he knows perfectly how the band has to sound. But this time he did an even better job for us, so for sure we'll go back again next time.
Nicko: I am very interested in the concept behind the album, starting from the artwork and the title, and then going on with the lyrical aspect. What can you tell us about it? Aad: It's about life after the apocalypse, when every life form is dead on the planet. Only the ones who survived this need to do the most horrible things to stay alive, like eating rotten meat and drinking toxic water - because of this they turned into zombies.
Nicko: A question about you: back in the days, why did you decide to leave drums and do the vocals? And as a drummer, how do you see Toep job on the latest two records? I think he's giving a great energy to
Sinister. And anyway, by your side, you not only have a great vocal tone, but also an outstanding stage presence. When I saw Sinister, I surely had a blast! Aad: Thanks a lot for the nice words, good to hear this. Oh yes, for sure Toep is pushing Sinister to a higher level and that is great, is also the reason why I asked him of course. But also Bastiaan is doing a great job on guitar, don't forget that he is creating all this sickness nowadays from Sinister.
Nicko: Do you have other projects aside from Sinister? I remember I've read about Supreme Pain. And also Houwitser, some years ago; I found them on the Internet, I guess then you've also kept up with brutal death metal sonorities then. Aad: I am doing only Sinister, this is and was always the most important band for me and that will never change of course. Supreme Pain was killer to do but when Bastiaan left to Sinister the band was falling apart. He was also the person how did all the music at the end for Supreme Pain.
Nicko: Do you have something going on for the future? Maybe some tours around? And maybe crushing a couple of Italian stages? Aad: We love to play in Italy of course, it's always good for us and right away we'd like to play with some of your great bands you have at the moment here in Italy, that would be a sick festival for sure. At the end of October Sinister will tour for the first time ever Australia, I am really looking forward to this.
Nicko: Thank you very much for the time you dedicated to this interview! My best wishes for the future, and feel free to leave a message to your Italian fans! Aad: Thanks a lot! And I hope that all extreme Italian metal heads will enjoy our last piece of brutality.

sapete qual è la situazione secondo me? io sarò uno dei pochi, se non l'unico, a credere che lisa santini non sia né un fake e né un troll, ma che sia effettivamente proprio così come la vediamo scrivere i commenti... sarò uno stupido, ma ne sono stato convinto sin dall'inizio... io me la immagino già davanti al computer, lei secondo me è la classica 14enne che ha preso una cotta per la musica, in questo caso la musica metal, e può essere anche vero che ascolta tutti sti cd e conosce tutti sti gruppi, ma lo fa con la testa di una persona di 14 anni, cioè magari ancora non con la maturità giusta, e poi di conseguenza saltano fuori questi suoi commenti che leggiamo e il più di volte fanno sorridere (per usare un eufemismo)... magari lei fra un po' di anni non si ricorderà nemmeno più di tutti i dischi che ha ascoltato e magari cambierà anche genere musicale, come può darsi che continuerà ad ascoltare metal, ma spero comunque che lo faccia in modo più ordinato e con le idee un po' meno confuse, deve mettere un po' di ordine in quella testa... se lisa leggerà queste parole spero non si offenda, ma io ho solo espresso quello che ho sempre pensato su di lei fin dall'inizio... |
