Monky: Ciao Shawn! È bello averti qui, su Metallized.it! Come stai?
Shawn Drover: Ciao Davide! È sempre bello parlare con voi! Sto molto bene, grazie.
Monky: Allora, Birth and the Burial è uscito da un po’ di settimane, ormai. Quali sono le tue impressioni sulla risposta da parte dei fan?
Shawn Drover: La risposta a Birth and the Burial è stata davvero fantastica! Lo sapevo che avevamo fatto un solido disco di buon heavy metal, ma non sai mai precisamente quale sarà la reazione da parte del pubblico – Tu speri solo per il meglio e cerchi di fare il miglior lavoro ogni volta, quindi vedere e sentire tutte queste ottime reazioni a Birth and the Burial ha reso me e la band davvero felici.
Monky: La mia impressione è che voi abbiate deciso di comporre un album senza compromessi, aggressivo ma con un lato melodico e tecnico che, talvolta, può fare la differenza. Come avete costruito queste tracce? Le avete scritte insieme, come un gruppo, oppure ognuno ha scritto la propria parte in solitaria?
Shawn Drover: Io e Chris abbiamo scritto cinque canzoni ciascuno per questo disco, perché all’epoca non avevamo né Matt, né Henry nella band! L’unica direzione musicale che io e Chris volevamo dare alla registrazione era che fosse 100% HEAVY METAL, che è proprio ciò che rappresenta questo disco. Henry si è unito alla band quando la maggior parte del materiale era già stato scritto, ma ci ha aiutati un sacco con i testi e con le canzoni, co-scrivendo addirittura tre brani insieme a me, quindi Henry è stato davvero importante per la stesura dei testi di Birth and the Burial.
Monky: Tu e Chris ormai suonate insieme da un bel po’ di tempo ed avete condiviso palchi di tutto il mondo. Ora avete cominciato questa avventura, con la costruzione di un percorso artistico che è vostro al cento per cento. E’ cambiato qualcosa nel vostro approccio alla composizione musicale?
Shawn Drover: Io sono ormai trent’anni che scrivo musica heavy metal, quindi questo per me non è nulla di nuovo. Nella mia vecchia band, gli Eidolon, ho scritto circa il novanta percento del materiale, quindi per me è stata una cosa del tutto naturale, scrivere i pezzi per Birth and the Burial. Io e Chris eravamo entrambi carichi ed esaltati per gli Act of Defiance e penso che il risultato parli da solo.
Monky: Come mai avete scelto Henry e Matt per completare la line-up e come è stato lavorare con loro in studio?
Shawn Drover: Conosco Matt da più di quindici anni, e avevo sentito che gli Shadows Fall non facevano più tour e che Matt stava cercando una nuova band, così l’ho contattato e gli ho chiesto se fosse interessato a suonare il basso con noi. Era molto esaltato per il progetto degli Act of Defiance, quindi penso che sia stata una cosa meravigliosa che Matt abbia preso parte alla line-up. E’ un gran musicista ed un grande uomo, che è una cosa molto importante per una band.
Monky: Perché avete scelto questo nome, Act of Defiance? Era un monicker che avevate in testa da un po’ di tempo?
Shawn Drover: Chris ha proposto questo nome dopo che già erano stati scartati un po’ di nomi – Bisogna essere sicuri che nessuno abbia già registrato uno dei monicker legalmente, quindi la maggior parte dei nomi che ci venivano in mente non erano utilizzabili. Act of Defiance è piaciuto ad entrambi, quindi appena ci siamo sincerati che nessun’altra band lo stava utilizzando, l’abbiamo fatto nostro.
Monky: E invece Birth and The Burial, perché questo titolo? E’ un concept?
Shawn Drover: No. E’ semplicemente il titolo di una canzone - non ci sono concept dietro questo disco, era semplicemente un bel nome di un brano e, quando si è trattato di scegliere il titolo che avrebbe rappresentato l’album, abbiamo scelto Birth and The Burial.
Monky: Molti vi conoscono per aver suonato nei Megadeth. Posso chiedervi qual è stata la motivazione per cui avete lasciato la band?
Shawn Drover: Non ci sono brutte storie o motivazioni particolari, sul motivo per cui sono uscito da quella band. Semplicemente volevo creare nuovo materiale, più pesante ed esprimere le mie idee musicali.
Monky: Che differenze pensate ci siano tra l’album degli Act of Defiance e gli ultimi dischi dei Megadeth?
Shawn Drover: Non c’è nulla di simile tra gli Act of Defiance e quella band. Per niente. Non confronto mai la mia musica con quella che ho suonato negli anni passati.
Monky: Sarete in tour con gli Allagaeon negli Stati Uniti. Verrete anche in Europa, in futuro?
Shawn Drover: SI!!!!! Sicuramente vogliamo girare moltissimo con Birth and the Burial e portare il nostro heavy metal alle persone che lo vogliono ascoltare. Suonare dal vivo è estremamente importante per noi, quindi potete scommetterci che suoneremo da qualche parte in Europa, nel 2016.
Monky: Cosa apprezzate maggiormente? Il lavoro in studio o i concerti dal vivo?
Shawn Drover: Entrambi sono ugualmente importanti, anche se sono completamente differenti. Per me, devi fare entrambe le cose per essere una band. Devi sempre provare a scrivere e produrre nuova musica, ma devi anche portarla in giro per il mondo, farla ascoltare ai tuoi fan, quindi penso che siano tutti e due fondamentali per avere successo come band.
Monky: Hai iniziato la carriera con tuo fratello Glen, che poi ti ha seguito nei Megadeth, ma artisticamente vi siete separati qualche tempo fa. Suoneresti ancora con lui? Prima o poi vi rivedremo insieme a suonare?
Shawn Drover: No, assolutamente no.
Monky: Con il passare degli anni hai modificato il tuo drum-kit. Qual è stato il tuo approccio tecnico nei confronti degli Act of Defiance e com’è cambiato rispetto agli anni passati?
Shawn Drover: Non ho poi cambiato molto il mio drum-kit con il passare degli anni. Negli Act of Defiance, suono le canzoni come voglio, non ci sono assolutamente compromessi ed è molto soddisfacente. Per gli Eidolon era la stessa cosa.
Monky: Mi è piaciuta molto l’idea di stampare alcune copie di Birth and the Burial su vinile. In questi giorni, quel tipo di supporto audio sta tornando di moda, anche se i download digitali continuano ad essere la scelta numero uno per la maggior parte delle persone. Tu che ne pensi?
Shawn Drover: Sono molto old-school, quindi per me è stato molto importante che Birth and the Burial uscisse anche in vinile e che molta gente stia tornando a questo tipo di supporto. Io ho sempre preferito di avere il supporto fisico tra le mani, quindi opterò sempre per il vinile o il cd, piuttosto che per il download digitale.
Monky: Sono della tua stessa idea. I vinili sono il meglio del meglio. Grazie mille per il tempo che ci hai concesso, Shawn, l’intervista è finita. Vuoi dire qualcosa ai tuoi fan italiani?

Monky: Hi Shawn! It’s great to have you here on Metallized.it! How are you?
Shawn Drover: Hello Davide! Always good to talk to you! I am doing very well, thanks.
Monky: So, Birth and the Burial has been out for a while now. What are your first impressions on the fans’ reception of it?
Shawn Drover: The reaction to Birth and the Burial has really been amazing!!!! I knew that we made a really solid, good heavy metal record, but you never really know how the fans of Metal will react to it – You just hope for the best and try to make the best record you can each time, so to see and hear so many great reactions to Birth and the Burial has made myself and the band very happy.
Monky: My impression is that you decided to make an album without compromises, aggressive but with a technical and melodic side that sometimes can make the difference. How did you create these tracks? Did you write the songs together as a group or did everybody write their part separately?
Shawn Drover: Chris and I both wrote 5 songs each for this record, because at the time we didn’t even have Matt and Henry in the band yet! The only musical direction Chris and I gave each other was that this record has to be 100% HEAVY METAL, which is exactly what we did for this record. Henry joined the band when we had most of the music written, but he did help a lot with writing lyrics for many of the songs and actually co-wrote 3 songs of lyrics with me to my songs, so Henry was very important to the lyric writing on Birth and the Burial.
Monky: You and Chris have played together for a long time now, and have shared stages all over the world. Now that you started this new adventure, with the construction of a path that musically is 100% yours. Did something change in your approach to this kind of music?
Shawn Drover: I have been writing heavy metal songs for almost 30 years now, so for me this is nothing new at all. In my old band Eidolon, I wrote around 90% of all the music for those records, so for me it was business as usual for writing new heavy metal songs for Birth and the Burial. Chris and I were both very inspired and excited to create music for Act of Defiance, and I think the results speak for themselves.
Monky: Why did you choose Henry e Matt to complete the line-up and how was it to work with them in the studio?
Shawn Drover: I have known Matt for over 15 years, and I had heard that Shadows Fall were not touring anymore and Matt was looking for a new band, so I contacted him to ask if he would be interested in playing bass for us. He was excited about joining Act of Defiance, so it really was a great thing that Matt joined the band. He is a great guy and a great musician, which of course is important for any band to have.
Monky: Why did you choose this name, Act of Defiance? Was it a name you had in mind for a long time?
Shawn Drover: Chris came up with the name after us having many different possibilities for a band name – You have to make sure nobody else has trademarked the name legally, so many of the names we had were already used by other bands. We both liked the name Act of Defiance, so once we found out that no other band has this name, we chose it for us.
Monky: What about Birth and The Burial, why this title? What’s the major topic of this album?
Shawn Drover: No. its just simply one song name-there is no concept for this record at all, it was just a cool name for one of our songs and when it became time to come up with a name, we chose Birth and The Burial for our record.
Monky: Many got to know you guys when you used to play in Megadeth. Can I ask you what were the main reasons that made you leave the band?
Shawn Drover: There are no bad stories or reasons why I quit that band. I simply wanted to create and write heavier music and express my ideas.
Monky: What do you think differs in this new Act of Defiance album from the last albums from Megadeth?
Shawn Drover: There is nothing similar between Act of Defiance and that band at all.I don’t compare my music with other bands or things I have done in the past at all.
Monky: You’ll be on tour with Allagaeon in the States. Will you tour Europe in the future?
Shawn Drover: YES!!!!! Of course we want to tour a lot for Birth and the Burial and bring our heavy metal music to people who want to hear it. Playing live is extremely important to us , so you can bet we will be in Europe sometime in 2016 for sure.
Monky: What do you appreciate the most: the studio songwriting sessions, or the tour and the live shows?
Shawn Drover: Both are equally important and completely different from each other. To me, you have to do both to be a proper band. You should always try to create new music and records, but you must tour and bring the music to Metal fans as well, so they are both really important for the potential success of any band, really.
Monky: You began your career with your brother Glen, who then followed you in Megadeth, but artistically you’ve parted ways some time ago. Will you still play with him? Will you go back to play together someday?
Shawn Drover: No, not at all.
Monky: During the years you had to variously modify your drum-kit. What was your technical approach in Act of Defiance and how was it different from your past bands?
Shawn Drover: My drum set up hasn’t really changed much over the years. In Act of Defiance, I’m playing the songs how I want to play, there is no compromise at all in my music, which is very liberating. Eidolon was the same way.
Monky: I really liked the idea of printing some copies of the record in vinyl. These days this kind of stuff is making a sort of comeback, even though digital downloads are still the number one choice for most of the people. What’s your opinion about it?
Shawn Drover: I am very old school, so to see our music in Vinyl is very important to me and I think more people are starting to embrace Vinyl again. I always prefer to have the physical product in my hands, so I will always prefer to have Vinyl and CD’s instead of a digital download.
Monky: Me too. Old school vinyls are the best. Thank you so much for your time, Shawn, the interview’s over. Do you want to say something to your Italian fans?
