FIRESPAWN - Intervista a Victor Brandt
07/04/2016 (1373 letture)

Cin cin!

VERSIONE INGLESE

Nicko: Hi, thanks for the possibility of this interview and welcome to Metallized.it pages! The world of metal music has recently got acknowledged of this new death metal super-group called Firespawn. Who is behind the foundation of the band and how did you come up with the idea of this side-project?
VICTOR: Hi, thank you very much for having us! We don’t really think of this as a "super group". We’re just good friends that really likes to play that has started a new band. I had a lot of songs and nowhere to put them really. So I talked to LG about starting another band and he was really interested. Then Alex Friberg talked to LG about wanting to start a new band and LG told him about this. So then we were three. Shortly after Fredrik Folkare joined and then Matte Modin. I am extremely happy with the line-up.

Nicko: Where does the name come from? I have read that there has been some indecision about it.
VICTOR: I think we went through at least 100 different band names before we found a single one we all could agree on. First it was Fireborn but there was a band that already were using that, and me and LG are really over bullshit with band names so we decided to find something better and we did. Firespawn. I think that both sounds and looks cooler so I like the move.

Nicko: Musically, one would expect some Swedish death, the good-old way, but listening to Shadows Realm I thought that the majority of the influences had come from US death metal. This may depend on the fact that it sounded to me just more brutal, fast and technical than the average classic Swedish stuff. What do you think about these considerations?
VICTOR: I agree with you. Some roots can not be cut so I think the "Swedish sound" will always be there but I definitely think that it is "Florida style" death metal. Morbid Angel is a huge influence of mine. So is Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, the first Hate Eternal and a lot of more of that stuff. I guess most people expected Firespawn to sound like a mix of the bands we are already in but I definitely think it does not. That was one of the main reasons of Firespawn too. We wanted to do something different, a new challenge. And it wouldn’t make sense to us to start a new band and make it sound like what we already are doing.

Nicko: Would you like to tell me something about the songwriting process? And most of all, what was the musical aim you tried to achieve?
VICTOR: I have written all the music and about half of the lyrics. But with that said, this a total band effort and we would not sound this good if we did not have these people in the band. But to answer your question, I want to mix all the things I enjoy listening to. A lot of it is in the landscape of Morbid Angel, some of it is inspired from Cannibal Corpse, the first Hate Eternal album, Suffocation, Behemoth, Vader, Trauma, so just like you said. A lot of US style death metal. But through a swedish filter.

Nicko: And what about the recording phase itself? Where, when and who did you recorded with and most of all: how did you choose? Was it fun to record this album?
VICTOR: I recorded my parts in Gothenburg, LG, Fredrik and Alex did their parts in Stockholm and Mattes drums along with the mix and mastering were done in Uppsala. In one way it was very smooth and fast but it was a lot of work. I am very pleased with how the album turned out. Lawrence Mackrory did a great job with the album. A little extra info. After we recorded Shadows Realm we did our first gig the week after. Then we went straight from that festival to another studio and me and LG recorded the new Entombed album. Fun but stressful period.

Nicko: I am glad you chose Paolo Girardi for your artwork; I think he is incredibly talented. How did you decided to ask him for Firespawn artwork?
VICTOR: Same here. Paolo Girardi is one of my favorite artists and one of the best there is. Total world class. Italian too. It was Jens from Century Media that first saw the painting that now is our cover and discovered that it had not been used. Even though it was not specifically made for us it fitted perfect. I think it makes the whole album better.

Nicko:In addition, what is the main idea behind the scene portrayed on this art?
VICTOR: I have my impression but I would ask Paolo to know more in detail.

Nicko: Last but not least, what are your plans for Firespawn’s live activity? We are curious! Have you already played any show or just booked some?
VICTOR: We played the House of Metal festival in northern Sweden last weekend. Another Swedish festival before that. We have about three more festivals confirmed that our booking agency has set up for us. We really enjoy playing these songs live. But also to just hang out and have e few beers. This is what we do.

Nicko: Generally speaking, what are your plans for the future?
VICTOR: We are currently working on our next album. There is about five songs on a demo stage. We just did some vocal recordings two weeks ago. We would like to release the next album quite soon. Then playing gigs. As many as possible.

Nicko: Thank you again for your time, and see all you guys soon around, with whichever band! Cheers!
VICTOR: Thank you too! We look forward to come to amazing Italy as soon as possible. Cin cin!
