WORMFOOD + ERDH - Avanguardismo, Tradizione e Visioni Futuristiche (Seconda Parte)

Ecco a voi la seconda ed ultima parte dell’intervista all’artista francese Emmanuel Lévy, leader dei Wormfood e vocalist nel progetto Erdh.
È un momento particolare per la storia di questo artista, dato che lo scorso anno sono stati rieditati alcuni vecchi lavori in Décade(nt), da pochi mesi è uscito l’album del suo nuovo progetto (Resilient) e si preannuncia la composizione di un nuovo album della sua band storica.
Questa seconda parte si incentra prevalentemente sull’esperienza rigenerante nel progetto cyber-goth Erdh, ma un occhio rimane sempre puntato verso il ritorno imminente sulle scene degli Wormfood.
Come già premesso nella Prima Parte, verrà riportata in calce anche la versione originale (in inglese) per consentire, a chi ci segue da oltre i confini della nostra penisola, di poter attingere direttamente alla fonte senza l’ausilio di strumenti di traduzione automatica che spesso non rendono appieno il senso del testo.

Metal3K: Passiamo ora al presente e parliamo del progetto Erdh. Come è nata la tua collaborazione con Nicolas Pingnelain? Se non è un segreto, che cosa significa questo acronimo? Emmanuel Lévy: Nicolas è il co-fondatore di una famosa webzine francese -poi passata alla carta stampata- chiamata Obsküre, dedicata al goth, al metal ed alla scena alternative. Lui è stato un fan dei Wormfood da lungo tempo, dato che ha recensito i nostri primi demo autoprodotti, e li ha apprezzati. Finalmente ci siamo incontrati quasi dieci anni dopo, nel corso di una festa in giardino! Siamo immediatamente entrati in sintonia, e subito mi ha offerto di essere ospite nel suo progetto... Poco dopo ho avuto modo di ascoltare le sue parti strumentali, e io le ho amate! Sono un po' megalomane, così alla fine gli ho chiesto se potevo essere "un po' più" che un semplice ospite. Ho registrato un demo vocale su una delle sue piste per convincerlo: ed è così che è nato Erdh. Per quanto riguarda l’acronimo, dovresti chiedere a lui direttamente!
Metal3K: Come è stato entrare in questo nuovo mondo fatto di suoni elettronici e cibernetici per te? La differenza tra le vostre personalità ed i vostri trascorsi (intendo i tuoi e quelli di Nicolas) ha giocato un ruolo fondamentale nella composizione della Resilient o a volte è stato difficile conciliarle? Emmanuel Lévy: È stata una bella sfida, una ventata d’aria fresca tra due album dei Wormfood, il fuggire nello spazio e nelle visioni futuristiche! Ho esplorato paesaggi astratti e immagini interiori... Il mio lavoro è stato veloce, molto intenso (ho scritto e registrato i miei testi in due mesi), ma semplice allo stesso tempo. Perché noi applichiamo questa semplice regola: Nicolas è padrone della sua musica, e così io lo sono dei miei testi e delle parti vocali. Ci rispettiamo ed abbiamo fiducia l'uno nell'altro. E ci completiamo.
Metal3K: Ci sono alcuni momenti in Resilient in cui sembra quasi che tu ti trasformi in una specie di robot. Che sensazione ti ha causato sentire la tua voce così "maltrattata" dai campionamenti e dagli effetti? Emmanuel Lévy: Sono felice di apprendere questo, questo è esattamente quello che voglio trasmettere in tracce come Pink Circuit, per esempio. Alla fine della canzone, la mia voce si "arrugginisce" gradualmente, dato che la mente del narratore viene caricata, fusa, nella sua amata macchina del sesso. Vengono sempre svolte parecchie ricerche di ingegnerizzazione del suono, presso i Walnut Groove Studios... Axel Wursthorn ha fatto un lavoro di produzione incredibile sulle voci e sugli effetti, e lui è un ottima guida per me.
Metal3K: Come è stato collaborare con Jens Bogren dei Fascination Street Studios svedesi? Emmanuel Lévy: Nicolas ha lavorato e interagito con lui. Io non l'ho fatto. Credo che sia una buona cosa per questo progetto beneficiare delle sue capacità di missaggio/mastering. Il risultato finale suona grandioso.
Metal3K: Qual è il tuo rapporto con l'astronomia, la scienza e la tecnologia in generale? Emmanuel Lévy: Ehi, questa è la prima volta che rispondo a una domanda su questo argomento da più di dieci anni! Inizialmente, ho studiato (e poi insegnato) letteratura e arti drammatiche. Non ero particolarmente dotato per gli studi scientifici quando andavo a scuola, lo confesso. Ora, io sono più aperto, curioso e attento al mondo ed all'universo che ci circonda. Ho un reale interesse per l'astronomia, la medicina o la zoologia, e cerco di leggere, viaggiare e imparare il più possibile. "Tecnologia" è un concetto vasto, emozionante (o terrificante). Attraverso i brani di Resilient, condivido una visione da incubo; ma io sono uno scrittore, non un profeta.
Metal3K: Quali sono i tuoi interessi nella vita oltre alla musica? Emmanuel Lévy: Varie forma di arte, soprattutto la letteratura. Spero di riuscire a scrivere un romanzo un giorno. Ho anche abbastanza fortuna da riuscire a sbarcare il lunario recitando, quindi anche il mio lavoro regolare fa parte dei miei interessi... Inoltre, viaggiare e scoprire posti nuovi ed amici in tutto il mondo è davvero importante per me.
Metal3K: Sembra proprio che la tua esperienza con Erdh sia stata molto proficua. Tuttavia, non è così chiaro per me che cosa significa esattamente per te. È solo una parentesi, un progetto parallelo, mentre il focus è ancora sulla tua creatura Wormfood, o no? Emmanuel Lévy: Sì, l'esperienza Erdh è stata un vero piacere. Non so cosa significhi esattamente per me! Un secondo album è già in cantiere, quindi posso quasi giurare che non era un "one shot"... Ora, mi sto concentrando sul prossimo album dei Wormfood. A dire la verità, io sto attualmente finendo l'ULTIMA traccia dell'album. E 'stato un lungo e solitario lavoro che si è svolto l’anno scorso, e non vedo l'ora di organizzare/eseguire questi brani con i miei compagni di band, al fine di entrare in studio il più presto possibile.
Metal3K: Quali altre sorprese hai in serbo per noi? Emmanuel Lévy: Questo mese, puoi sentirmi cantare sul nuovo album dei Melted Space (il progetto metal sinfonico del nostro tastierista Pierre le Pape), chiamato Between, con Liv Kristine, Ashmedi (Melechesh) e Black Messiah (Seth)... Wormfood dovrebbe tornare presto, più forte/più inedito/più scuro che mai. Il secondo album di Erdh suona alla grande (anche se mancano le parti vocali).

Metal3K: Let’s pass now to the present and talk about Erdh-project. How did your collaboration with Nicolas Pingnelain start? If it is not a secret, what does this acronym mean? Emmanuel Lévy: Nicolas is the co-founder of a famous French webzine -later a printed magazine- called Obsküre, dedicated to goth, metal and alternative scenes. He was a Wormfood fan for a long time, as he reviewed our first self-released demos, and enjoyed them. We finally met almost ten years after, during a garden party! We immediately hit it off together, and quickly he offered me to be a guest on his project... Soon I listened to his instrumental songs, and I loved them! I'm a bit megalomaniac, so I finally asked if I could be "a little more" than a guest. I recorded a vocal demo on one of his tracks to convince him : and Erdh was born. Regarding the acronym, you should ask him directly!
Metal3K: How was it to enter into this new world made of electronic and cybernetic sounds for you? Has the difference between your personalities and backgrounds (I mean yours and Nicolas’ ones) played a key role in the makeup of Resilient or sometimes was it hard to conciliate them? Emmanuel Lévy: It was a good challenge, very refreshing between two Wormfood albums, to escape into space and futuristic visions! I explored abstract landscapes and inner images... My work has been fast, very intense (I wrote my lyrics and recorded them in two months), but easy at the same time. Because we apply this simple rule: Nicolas is the master of his music, and so am I with my lyrics and vocals. We respect and trust each other. And we complete.
Metal3K: There are some moments in Resilient in which it almost seems that you become a sort of robot. What sensation has caused to you to hear your voice so "mistreated" by sampling and effects? Emmanuel Lévy: I'm happy to read that, that's exactly what I want to suggest in tracks such as Pink Circuit, for example. In the end of the song, my voice is gradually "rusting", as the mind of the narrator is uploaded, melted, into his beloved sex machine. There's always a lot of sound design researches in progress, at the Walnut Groove Studios... Axel Wursthorn did an incredible production work on the vocals and effects, and he's an excellent coach for me.
Metal3K: How was it to collaborate with Jens Bogren of Swedish Fascination Street Studios? Emmanuel Lévy: Nicolas worked and exchanged with him. I did not. I guess it's a good thing for this project to benefit from his mixing/mastering skills. The final result sounds great.
Metal3K: What is your relationship with astronomy, science in general and technology? Emmanuel Lévy: Hey, that's the first time I answer a question about this topic in more than ten years! Initially, I studied (and later taught) literature and dramatic arts. I wasn't really gifted for scientific studies when I was in school, I confess. Now, I'm more open-minded, curious and attentive to the world and universe that surrounds us. I have a real interest in astronomy, medicine or zoology, and try to read, travel and learn as much as I can. "Technology" is a vast, exciting (or frightening) concept. Through Resilient songs, I share a nightmare vision ; but I'm a writer, not a prophet.
Metal3K: What are your interests in life apart from music? Emmanuel Lévy: Various form of arts, especially literature. I hope I'll succeed in writing a novel someday. I'm also lucky enough to live from acting, so even my regular work is part of my interests... Beside, traveling and discovering new places and friends all around the world is really important to me.
Metal3K: It really seems to me that your experience with Erdh has been very profitable. However, it is not so clear for me what does it exactly mean for you. Is it just a parenthesis, a side project, while your focus is still on your creature Wormfood, or not? Emmanuel Lévy: Yes, Erdh experience has been a real pleasure. I don't know what it means exactly for me! A second album is already in work, so I can almost swear that it wasn't a "one shot"... Now, I'm focusing on the next Wormfood album. To tell you the truth, I'm currently finishing the LAST track of the album. It has been a long and solitary work this past year, and I'm looking forward to arranging/performing these songs with my bandmates, in order to enter the studio as soon as possible.
Metal3K: What other surprises do you keep in reserve for us? Emmanuel Lévy: This month, you can hear me sing on Melted Space's new album (our keyboardist Pierre le Pape's symphonic metal project), called Between, with Liv Kristine, Ashmedi (Melechesh) and Black Messiah (Seth)... Wormfood should be back soon, stronger/stranger/darker than ever. Erdh's second album sounds great (even if it misses its vocals).
