I Massacre proseguono la loro avventura metallica, con un nuovo terremotante album, ed imperdibili concerti live. Nicolò "Nicko" Brambilla ha colto l'occasione di fare due chiacchere con Terry Butler.

Nicolò: Ciao Terry, grazie dell'opportunità di questa intervista e benvenuto su Metallized!
Terry: Grazie a voi!
Nicolò: Cominciamo a parlare del nuovo album dei
Massacre Back From Beyond, che uscirà per
Century Media questo marzo e
recensito da me, qui su Metallized.it; lasciami dire che sono davvero impressionato, è un disco solido ed aggressivo. Cosa vorresti dirci a proposito?
Terry: Bene, come hai detto è solido ed aggressivo. Questi sono i Massacre. Volevamo un disco Florida death metal senza fronzoli. Penso che ci siamo riusciti. È pieno zeppo di riff intensi e orecchiabili e un drumming brutale. La produzione è molto pesante, merito di Tim Vasquez che l’ha mixato e masterizzato nei sui CGM Studios a Orlando. Ci sono 13 nuovi inediti.
Nicolò: Alla fine la reunion dei Massacre si è stabilizzata nel 2012. Come siete giunti alla scelta di scrivere nuova musica sotto questo moniker? Cosa ci dici a proposito dei nuovi membri e dei vecchi che non sono stati coinvolti in questa reunion, come Kam Lee(ex-vocalist dei Massacre n.d.r)?
Terry: Io e Rick (Rick Rozz, chitarrista dei Massacre, n.d.r.) abbiamo iniziato nel 2011 a parlare di un possibile tour di reunion dei Massacre, in occasione del ventesimo anniversario di From Beyond. Bill (Bill Andrews, ex-batterista dei Massacre, N.d.R.) non suona più e ci ha dato il suo consenso per continuare con questo nome. Kam invece non è mai stato considerato a causa delle sue azioni e del suo atteggiamento negli ultimi 20 anni. Mikey stava già suonando con Rick e avevo sentito quanto fosse bravo, sapevo così che avrebbe potuto essere il nostro nuovo batterista. Ed suonava con i Diabolic ed alcune band della zona di Tampa. Rick gli ha chiesto di provare e l’ha fatto con successo. La nostra line up era completa. La Century Media ci vide suonare alla seconda edizione della crociera 70000 Tons of Metal, dove suonammo una nuova canzone. A loro piacque ciò che sentirono e ci misero sotto contratto. Così abbiamo iniziato a scrivere subito delle nuove tracce.
Nicolò: Come ha preso forma il processo di songwriting? Che cosa vi ha ispirato di più? Com’è cambiato il vostro approccio compositivo negli anni e quali sono gli obiettivi musicali di questo nuovo album?
Terry: Sostanzialmente Rick ha iniziato a tirare fuori ritmiche velocemente, e le nuove canzoni cominciavano a prendere forma piuttosto rapidamente. Rick e Mikey vivono a Orlando, così avrebbero lavorato assieme sullo scheletro delle composizioni, mentre io ed Ed saremmo arrivati da Tampa per aggiungere ciò che potevamo. È stato di grande ispirazione essere di nuovo qui e sotto contratto di una label dopo tutto questo tempo. Penso che l’approccio compositivo sia avvenuto nello stesso modo di From Beyond. È lo stile dei Massacre, non c’è bisogno di discostarsene.
Nicolò: Back From Beyond ha anche un gran sound; siete soddisfatti della produzione? È davvero pesante, non come certe orribili produzioni moderne. Che tipo di suono stavate cercando per esattezza?
Terry: Grazie, siamo assolutamente soddisfatti. È molto pesante, abrasivo e brutale!!! Semplicemente, abbiamo collegato gli strumenti e registrato. Non c’è robaccia finta, ciò che senti sono semplicemente i nostri strumenti. Inoltre le canzoni stesse, orecchiabili e piene di buoni riff, hanno aiutato la produzione.
Nicolò: Negli ultimi anni, il death metal della vecchia scuola sta attraversando una seconda primavera; molte band degli anni ’80 o dei primi ’90 si sono riunite per suonare ancora e registrare nuova musica. Credi che questa situazione abbia permesso a nuovi fan di avvicinarsi alla musica dei Massacre? Come credi che sarà la reazione dei vecchi e dei nuovi all’album? Possiamo evincere fin dal titolo che lo spirito dei Massacre è rimasto invariato!
Terry: Ritengo che oggi internet e social network aiutino a spargere la voce molto di più che in passato, quando c’erano soltanto le riviste e il comune passaparola. Penso che i fan della vecchia guardia apprezzeranno il disco, riconosceranno i Massacre in questa musica. Auspicabilmente, anche le nuove generazioni di fan che ascolteranno il CD e lo apprezzeranno si interesseranno alla band! I Massacre sono tornati e hanno dentro un fuoco che arde!
Nicolò: Una domanda più nostalgica: come ricordi i primi anni dei Death e dei Massacre? Quell’energia è ancora viva? Che cos’è cambiato nel mondo del metal? Dopotutto, tu ne sei stato protagonista con Massacre, Death, Six Feet Under ed ora Obituary, un’incredibile carriera nel metal estremo!
Terry: I vecchi giorni dei Death e dei Massacre sono molto speciali per me. Erano i primi tempi del death metal e tutto era una novità. Stavamo spianando la strada per moltissime band a venire ma nemmeno lo sapevamo al tempo. Quell’energia c’è ancora, assolutamente. Amo suonare e creare nuova musica. Il death metal nel frattempo è diventato più popolare e tecnico; oggi ci sono così tante diramazioni, un tempo si trattava soltanto di death metal. Penso che parte dell’originalità non ci sia più; puoi arrivare solo a un certo punto con velocità, potenza e urla. Sono stato fortunato a suonare il tipo di musica che amo per così tanto tempo. Ne sono molto fiero in effetti!!!
Nicolò: Una parentesi non legata ai Massacre: come sta andando il nuovo disco degli Obituary? Ho visto che avete tentato la via del crowd-funding, avete trovato la reazione che vi attendevate?
Terry: Stiamo registrando proprio ora il nuovo album degli Obituary, dovrebbe essere pubblicato a giugno. Ci sono 14 pezzi di pura brutalità, classici Obituary. Abbiamo ottenuto più che una semplice reazione, siamo stati sommersi. Siamo stati fregati non poco dall’industria della musica, è tempo di prendere il timone e controllare il nostro destino.
Nicolò: Ora, un’ultima domanda: arriverete a distruggere qualche palco italiano in futuro? State pianificando di partecipare a qualche festival europeo la prossima estate?
Terry: L’Italia verrà presto brutalizzata! Ci imbarcheremo in un tour completo più avanti quest’anno e parteciperemo a molti festival nel 2015.

Nicolò: Let’s start talking about new
Massacre record
Back From Beyond that will be out this March for
Century Media and
reviewed it by me here on
Metallized.it; let me tell you that I’m really impressed, it’s a solid and aggressive album. What would you like to tell us about it?
Terry: Well as you said it’s solid and aggressive. That’s Massacre. We wanted a no frills in your face Florida death metal record. I think we achieved that. It’s chocked full of catchy chunky riffs and brutal drumming. The production is very heavy thanks to Tim Vasquez. He mixed and mastered it at his studio in Orlando called CGM Studios. There are 13 songs of new material.
Nicolò: Finally Massacre reunion got stable in 2012. How did you come to the choice of making new music under this moniker? What about the new members and the old ones not involved in this reunion, as Kam Lee?
Terry: Rick and I started talking in 2011 about doing a Massacre reunion tour for the 20th anniversary of From Beyond. Bill doesn’t play anymore and gave us his blessings to carry on the name. Kam was never considered because of his actions and attitude over the last 20 years. Mikey was playing with Rick already and I heard how shredding he was so I knew he could handle the drumming. Ed played with Diabolic and some local bands around Tampa. Rick asked him to come try out and he did and nailed it. Our lineup was complete. Century Media saw us performing on the 2nd 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise and we played a new song. They liked what they heard and signed us. So we started writing new songs right away.
Nicolò: How did the songwriting process take form? What inspired you more? How your writing approach has changed during the years and what are the musical aims of this new album?
Terry: Well basically Rick started bashing out rhythms at a good clip. Songs were starting to come together kind of quickly. Rick and Mikey live in Orlando so they would put the skeleton of the song together and Ed and I would come in from Tampa and add what we could. It was very inspiring to be back and signed to a label after all this time. That was inspiring enough. I think the song writing was approached the same way as From Beyond. It’s the Massacre style, no need to deviate from that.
Nicolò: Back From Beyond also sounds killer; are you satisfied with the production? Really heavy, not like some awful modern productions. What kind of sound were you exactly looking at?
Terry: Thank you, yes we are satisfied. It’s very heavy, raw and brutal!!! We basically just plugged in and recorded. No fake shit, what you hear is our instruments. The songs help in the production. The songs are very riffy and catchy.
Nicolò: During last years, old school death metal is having a second spring; lots of band from the 80s or early 90s reunited to play again and record new music. Do you feel this situation permitted many new metal fans to get closer to Massacre’s music? How will be the reaction of old and new fans to this new album? We can see, even from the title, that Massacre spirit is still the same.
Terry: I think the internet and social sites help spread the word much more today. Back in the day it was only magazines and word of mouth. I think the old school fans will enjoy the album. They will see that the music is Massacre. Hopefully the newer generations of fans hears the CD and are crushed by it and get into the band!!! Massacre is back with a fire burning inside.
Nicolò: A more nostalgic question: how do you remember early Death and Massacre days? Is that energy still alive? What changed in death metal world? You experienced it through Massacre, Death, Six Feet Under and Obituary now, an incredible career in extreme music!
Terry: The early days of Death and Massacre are very special to me. This was an early time for death metal and everything was fresh. We were paving the way for bands but didn’t even know it yet. That energy is definitely still there. I love playing and creating music. Death metal has become more popular and technical. There are so many off shoots now, back in the day it was just death metal. I think some of the originality has gone. You can only do so much with blasting and screaming. I’ve been fortunate to play the type of music I love for this long. I’m very proud indeed!!!
Nicolò: A non-Massacre-related parenthesis: how’s new Obituary record going? I see you crowd-funded it, did you have the reaction you expected?
Terry: The new Obituary is being recorded right now. It should be out in June. There are 14 songs of brutality. Classic Obituary. We got much more of a reaction. It was overwhelming. We’ve been ripped of so much by the industry. It’s time to be hands on and control our destiny.
Nicolò: Now, a last question: are you going to come and crush some Italian stages in the future? Are you planning to take part to some European festivals next summer?
Terry: Yes Italy will be brutalized very soon!!!! Lol, we will do a full tour later this year and a lot of festivals in 2015.
